While some of us are fortunate enough to have extra money sitting around to spend frivolously, others need to put every dollar they earn toward necessities like bills, groceries, and a mortgage. Sometimes, unfortunately, not all of us are able to just cover basic living expenses.
Recently at the New Life Covenant Church in Chicago, Pastor Wilfredo De Jesús had been encouraging those in his congregation to honour strangers through generosity and kindness.
To help set the tone for this initiative, De Jesús ordered pizzas during one of his preaching sessions. Shortly thereafter, the pizzas arrived thanks to Dominos delivery driver Monique Hall.
De Jesús eventually brought Hall to the stage and asked her what she usually receives for a tip. After responding with “$5,” De Jesús pulled out money from his pocket and tipped Hall $100. Then, to Hall’s further surprise, De Jesús called on 10 people from the audience to randomly come up to the stage and contribute more money to the tip.
For minutes, a parade of churchgoers – far greater than 10 people – kept entering the stage and placing money in Hall’s hand. As you could imagine, the tears began to flow.
Hall, a single mother, could barely speak when asked by De Jesús to say a few words, but did convey her thankfulness.
In an interview with WGN in Chicago, Hall better expressed what this amazing moment meant to her.
“I definitely wasn’t expecting it, but I knew that I had been struggling for a long time being a single parent…especially trying to make ends meet,” said Hall, who wound up sharing the money with her fellow delivery drivers. “So when they did that, I was overwhelmed and I was shocked. I felt so loved by them – all I could do was cry.”
