A bride walking down the aisle with her father is one of the most touching moments to happen at any given wedding. Unfortunately for Jeni Stepien of Pennsylvania, this was unable to happen for her, as her father Michael was murdered in 2006.

However, a small, yet very important piece of him made it to the ceremony: his heart.

When Michael passed away, his heart was donated to Arthur Thomas, a man who was admittedly close to “death’s door,” before the transplant. After the procedure, he stayed in contact with Jeni’s family over the years and when it came time for her to get married earlier this month, she reached out to him to see if he would walk her down the aisle – Thomas obliged.

“You can never imagine what that would be like unless you actually do it because so many emotions [are] involved in what you’re doing,” commented Thomas. “What greater honor could a person have than walking the daughter of the man who’s given his heart to him. I can’t imagine a greater honor.”

Offered Stepien: “I was just so thankful that my dad could be here with us today in spirit and a piece of his physical being as well. That was really special for us.”

“It’s just like having my dad here,” she added, “and better because we get to share this story with people and other people see that organ donors do matter.”

Here is a closer look at Stepien’s special day:
