TV is still by far the most effective advertising medium!

Many have predicted that TV will lose out to streaming services like Netflix and YouTube, but the study shows that TV remains the steadfast company of entertainment consumers. That is the finding of a new study Turner Broadcasting and Horizon Media partnered with MarketShare, which meta-analyzed thousands of marketing optimizations used by major advertisers from 2009 – 20014.

  • “TV is the giant megaphone when you want to get the message out, TV is still the most poweful means to do it.” Said Isaac Weber, VP of strategy at MarketShare.
  • TV is the only medium to maintain its effectiveness during the five years, only decreasing 1.5% in comparison to all other mediums including digital and offline that fell 10%.
  • TV averaged four times the sales lift of digital, when comparing performance at similar spending levels, at achieving key performance indicators like sales and new accounts.

Researchers really wanted to do the study to better understand how TV’s effectiveness – not average rating was driving key KPI’s for advertisers and how that has changed over time. “TV really works, and there are ways to make it work better in challenging times.” Said Howard Shimmel, chief research officer at Turner Broadcasting.

The study is not saying that digital is bad, but is saying TV advertising with digital used in a way that is complementary to TV is more effective than digital alone. The key reason is that digital cannot make up the reach that TV delivers.
